WHO WE ARE

Welcome to the parish of St Augustine’s Hamilton, a Christian community in the Anglican tradition, serving Brisbane’s Hamilton and Ascot.

We hope you find what you are looking for easily, but please contact the office on 07 3268 3935 if we can help in any way.

St Augustine’s Church, located on Racecourse Road in Hamilton, has been integral to the community since 1895 (and in its current form since 1920), and is open daily to visitors.

Prayer is central to our lives as followers of Jesus Christ seeking to serve our neighbourhood, and we guarantee a warm welcome at our services during the week, our early Sunday service at 7.30am or the 9.30am Sunday Sung Eucharist with our talented choir.

A MEMORIAL CHURCH

The Anglican Church of St Augustine’s Hamilton was built as a thank-offering to God for deliverance and peace, and as a War Memorial Church to the valour, sacrifice and endurance of Australian men and women who served in the Great War.

By the end of the hostilities, Australia had the highest casualty rate of the Allied Forces. Unable to lay loved ones to rest at home, Australians expressed their grief by erecting war memorials.

This beautiful church is an imposing two-storey brick building set in leafy grounds on Racecourse Road, nick-named the ‘Jewel Box’ for its stunning stained-glass windows. After World War II a series of stained-glass windows were installed as a memorial to those who died in that war, including fifty-two parishioners. A prominent Queensland artist, William Bustard, designed the windows. The church is a war memorial commemorating both world wars. The tower was added to the church in 1961, dedicated to the men and women who served in World War II.

Different sections of the church represent different branches of the armed forces. The main body is a memorial to the Army, the organ loft to the Navy and the bell tower to the Air Force. In the area under the church is a Chapel, which is also a Columbarium. This chapel is open during the day for private prayer and reflection.

WITH YOU ALONG THE WAY

For two thousand years, people have been marking important stages of life with Christian ceremonies. It is a great privilege for us to host baptisms (Christenings), weddings and funerals, and will be pleased to work with you to make the day appropriate for you and your loved ones.

Baptisms

Baptism, often called a Christening, is a gift of God’s grace and the sacramental beginning of new life in Christ and his Church. In it, we give thanks for God’s love, celebrate the gift of life, and respond to his call to follow Jesus. Baptism is received once, yet it may be embraced at any stage of life, from infancy through to adulthood.

At St Augustine’s, baptisms take place at 11.15am following our 9.30am Sunday service, and can be arranged on any Sunday. It is a joyful moment of worship as we gather to thank God and welcome new members into the life of his Church.

Weddings

Celebrate your wedding in the beauty and reverence of St Augustine’s, a historic church rich in character and sacred tradition. Set within a timeless setting, our church offers a place where your vows are made before God, surrounded by prayer, music, and the presence of family and friends. We would be honoured to help you mark the beginning of your married life with a service that is both deeply meaningful and truly memorable.

Funerals

Arranging a funeral is never an easy or enjoyable experience, but whether you are making arrangements for the funeral of a loved one or planning for the future and leaving instructions for your own, we can help put together a service within the richness of the Anglican tradition that speaks of the promise of eternal life we have in God, through Jesus Christ.
